Complex Coevolutionary Dynamics - Structural Stability and Finite Population Effects

چکیده
Unlike evolutionary dynamics, co-evolutionary dynamics can exhibit a wide variety of complex regimes. This has been confirmed by numerical studies e.g. in the context of Evolutionary Game Theory (EGT) and population dynamics of simple two-strategy games with various types of replication and selection mechanisms. Using the framework of shadowing lemma we study to what degree can such infinite population dynamics (1) be reliably simulated on finite precision computers and (2) be trusted to represent co-evolutionary dynamics of possibly very large, but finite populations. In a simple EGT setting of two-player symmetric games with two pure strategies and a polymorphic equilibrium we prove that for (μ, λ), truncation, sequential tournament, best-of-group tournament and linear ranking selections, the co-evolutionary dynamics do not possess the shadowing property. In other words, infinite population simulations cannot be guaranteed to represent real trajectories or to be representative of co-evolutionary dynamics of potentially very large, but finite populations.

Discrete stochastic processes, replicator and Fokker-Planck equations of coevolutionary dynamics in finite and infinite populations
Finite-size fluctuations in coevolutionary dynamics arise in models of biological as well as of social and economic systems. This brief tutorial review surveys a systematic approach starting from a stochastic process discrete both in time and state. The limit N → ∞ of an infinite population can be considered explicitly, generally leading to a replicator-type equation in zero order, and to a Fok...
متن کاملCoevolutionary dynamics in large, but finite populations.
Coevolving and competing species or game-theoretic strategies exhibit rich and complex dynamics for which a general theoretical framework based on finite populations is still lacking. Recently, an explicit mean-field description in the form of a Fokker-Planck equation was derived for frequency-dependent selection with two strategies in finite populations based on microscopic processes [A. Traul...
متن کاملStochastic effects on biodiversity in cyclic coevolutionary dynamics
Finite-size fluctuations arising in the dynamics of competing populations may have dramatic influence on their fate. As an example, in this article, we investigate a model of three species which dominate each other in a cyclic manner. Although the deterministic approach predicts (neutrally) stable coexistence of all species, for any finite population size, the intrinsic stochasticity unavoidabl...
متن کاملComputational Analysis of Residue Interaction Networks and Coevolutionary Relationships in the Hsp70 Chaperones: A Community-Hopping Model of Allosteric Regulation and Communication
Allosteric interactions in the Hsp70 proteins are linked with their regulatory mechanisms and cellular functions. Despite significant progress in structural and functional characterization of the Hsp70 proteins fundamental questions concerning modularity of the allosteric interaction networks and hierarchy of signaling pathways in the Hsp70 chaperones remained largely unexplored and poorly unde...

A finite element solution based on equevalent elements is proposed for the static and dynamic analysis of tallhigh tensioned cable antennas. To reduce high number of degrees of freedom in space frame body of a structure, a simple equivalent beam element is defined for each simulative substructure. This numerical procedure is applicable to analyze complex three dimensional assemblies of substruc...
